Sketchup Notes

Notes for me to remember....

Drawing Setup:

Windows/Model Info
  • set units 1/64"
  • credits --used if sharing model with google
  • enable scene transitions
Window/Outliner
  • shows all components of model
  • when you select a component, the name is also selected  
Windows/Scenes
  •  save camera angles/views of model
  • you can then move from one scene to another with animation
Move Tool
  • hit "ALT" and a + appears, copy is enabled
  • hit "ALT" again and copy is toggled, so MOVE is enabled
  •  
  •  
Make shelves quick
  • make two sides of bookcase
  • make bottom shelf
  • select move tool, hit "ALT", + appears  
  • select top left corner of bottom shelf
  • drag to top of left side
  • type /3
  • three more shelves will be created, even spaced between the top and the bottom shelf
Groups
  • you can select an object using the arrow tool, and drawing a dotted box around it
  • you can then right click and make it a group. Then you can move it as a group
  • you can also select many groups and make them a group
  • if you double-click a group, you can edit inside it. If you double-click again on a group inside a group, you can edit it as well.

ORBIT Tool
  • click mouse wheel and move mouse
ZOOM Tool
  • turn mouse wheel
PAN Tool
  • press SHIFT and press the mouse wheel
Move in the same plane
  • press shift while you use the move tool
SELECTION OF OBJECTS ---IMPORTANT!
  • using the arrow tool, drawing a box from the top left to the right (downward) you select objects which are completely enclosed in the box drawn
  • if you draw from the bottom right to the top left, you select anything that the box drawn touches.
GUIDE LINES
  • use the tape measure tool on faces !
 COPY A BOARD
  • to copy a board 4 times,  spacing them evenly
    • draw a guide on the bottom.
    • select copy tool, press "ALT" get +
    • select the guide, and drag it to the top of the board. Let go of the mouse button
    • type /4
    • this will copy the line four times between the two guides
DIVIDE A LINE
  • context select the line (Control +click)
  • go the the drop-down menu "divide"
  • move the pointer over the line and you will see different divisions as you move the pointer
  • type the number of segments you what and press "return"
  •  If you can not see the end-points, go to Windows/Styles and click on End Points and indicate how many pixels to use.
